Soon, the narrow Republican majority in the Senate could trample on the rights of the minority party by attempting to invoke the "nuclear option." This action would enable the majority to side-step Senate rules by taking away the minority's right to filibuster judicial nominees. Employing the nuclear option would circumvent 200 years of Senate tradition of using the filibuster to give the minority a voice on legislation and judicial nominees whose extreme positions are out of step with the American people. Even more alarming is that Republicans could use the nuclear option to oppose the use of the filibuster in other instances. There would be no stopping a narrow majority from passing laws that hurt middle class families, roll back civil rights protections, curtail environmental protections and privatize Social Security. Tell your Senators that Americans deserve better!
