Take the Peace Pledge to Honor Mother's Day In 1870, abolitionist, writer and organizer Julia Ward Howe issued a Mother's Day Proclamation to protest the carnage of the Civil War. She called on women to rise up and say "Disarm, disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice". While Mother's Day has since become grossly commercialized, this year I want to honor that beautiful, original vision of Mother's Day.
